A New Career Pathway for Garrett County Resident

Garrett County resident Renee Lantz came to the Western Maryland Consortium in the Summer of 2019 ready to make a career change that would benefit her future. She had a clear goal of becoming Certified in Medical Coding and Billing, but needed some financial assistance to achieve that goal. Renee and her husband have a young family they are raising and it just wasn’t possible for her to go into her training program at Garrett College without the support and financial assistance of the Western Maryland Consortium (WMC). It had been 18 years since Renee had graduated from high school and she knew she needed to refresh her reading and math skills in order to be successful in her workforce training. Utilizing the Career Pathways program offered at the Consortium in conjunction with Garrett College, Renee was able to brush up on her reading and math skills while simultaneously beginning her Certified Medical Billing & Coding training. From start to finish, Renee had her Career Counselor from WMC to assist her as she worked toward her goal. In February 2020, she took the National Healthcareer Association exam and earned her credential as a Certified Billing and Coding Specialist. Within weeks, Renee had several job interviews in the field and accepted a position with a local family medicine practice in the beautiful mountains of Garrett County, MD. Renee’s motivation to utilize the programs, services, and resources provided by the Western Maryland Consortium has changed her and her family’s future!
